LONDON, UK (NME) - The Stone Roses self titled debut album, which was hastily recorded overnight to save on studio costs, has been named the greatest album of all time.
Writers from NME decided the Manchester band's 1989 debut was greater than anything by The Beatles, Beach Boys or Smiths to top its list of the 100 best LPs.
The upper reaches of the chart is largely dominated by acknowledged classics, rather than flash in the pan acts, although retro guitar band The Strokes make it to number seven.

The poll, conducted for the first time in ten years, saw the Pixies' 'Doolittle' LP, also released in 1989, come in at Number Two. The 1993 winner of the poll, 'Pet Sounds' by The Beach Boys, is at Number Three this time.
