LONDON, UK (Top40 Charts/ by Jenny McCarthy - Staff Writer) - RECORD OF THE WEEK
Tinchy Stryder ft. N-Dubz - Number One:
N-Dubz. Everything they do raises a grin to my chops. Dappy's insistence on throwing in a "nah-nah-naiii-hee" as soon as his microphone is switched on is a brilliant pop thing. Tinchy's singy-raps, contrasting nicely with Dappy's rappy-singing. The 'Bittersweet Symphony' synths - ot that I'm saying there's a direct rip off happening. I'm no expert in copyright infringement in any case!

HOT SHOT RECORD
William Orbit - Optical Illusions :
Tres bon remixes on this EP that sees a welcome return from William Orbit with his new album 'My Oracle Lives Uptown' will be released in May. The remixes are strong. Check out the tidy drum and bass rework by Dr Meaker. It's really smooth and has a dancefloor bassline chicness about it. There's also a chilled broken beat trip hop mix from Trenchman, again with that big juicy bassline most prominent. Aaron Jerome pops up with the usual top drawer ambient breaks dub affair for a more relaxed take on things. Radio edit - nice and chilled out with sweet strings, synths and vocals. I prefer my ambient without traditional instruments though.

Anna Grace - You Make Me Feel: The debut single 'You Make Me Feel' features remixes from Francesco Diaz & Thomas Gold, Voodoo & Serano and John Luniz. In case you are wondering why Anna Grace's voice sounds so familiar, its because its no other than Annemie Coenen - the singer of Ian Van Dah

Kleerup feat Titiyo - Longing For Lullabies: Andreas Kleerup mastered the art of break-up disco on 2007's 'With Every Heartbeat', a collaboration with Robyn that glided all the way to the top of the UK singles chart. 'Longing For Lullabies', first released as a single in Sweden a year ago, could perhaps be viewed as a sequel to that song, but if so, it's that rare sequel that matches the original. Featuring vocals from Titiyo - Neneh Cherry's half-sister - it's a gorgeously sad electropop ballad about breaking up, moving on and accepting that a small piece of the love that died still lingers. As Titiyo delivers the affecting melody over Kleerup's mixture of percolating beats and strings, you might even find your top lip quivering a bit. Don't beat yourself up about it - the same thing happened to us.

Junior Boys - Hazel: Hazel, the first single from Junior Boys' upcoming third album Begone Dull Care is the best thing they've ever done, repudiating all the fair criticisms that can be levelled at the Canadian electropop duo. If they can at times give off an air of reserved tastefulness, it's because they don't do beats as funky as this often enough, or vocals as heartfelt about stories so illuminating. Starting with a hard beat that wouldn't have been unwelcome on a mid-80s Michael Jackson record, it's immediately clear that the band's new material is not simply an afterthought to 2006's So This Is Goodbye. The breakdown is glorious, all pulsing silver bursts and soulful howls at the moon, but it's the slow unfurling of the lovesick story towards a climactic last line that'll send you head over heels. Hazel is an understated pop triumph that is bound to be remixed to high heaven throughout the summer.

Red Blooded Women - Enjoy The Silence : Okay, so when I heard a band I'd never heard of was taking on this Depeche Mode classic, I was obviously a little dubious, and unfortunately for the trio in Red Blooded Women, If you're going to cover a track - and a track of this magnitude - there's no point just re-creating the original, you have to make it your own (unless you're on X Factor obviously). Don't get me wrong, the girls do have a good crack at it, considering there are an epic SEVEN versions of the same song on the single, each with a slightly difference dancey / drum and bass backbeat, buy let's face it... you can't reinvent the wheel... so don't try to recreate Depeche Mode.

Rozalla Miller - For Lovers: Despite being best known for her 1991 hit 'Everybody's Free (To Feel Good)', Rozalla Miller's new album, Brand New Version, is much mellower than the dance-production she favoured in the 90's. This album is a jazz/soul feel, and the song choices represent a departure from her previous work, with Brand New Version including covers of Paul Weller's 'Broken Stones' and Wolfman & Pete Doherty's 'For Lovers'.

Temper Trap - Science Of Fear: Soon embarking on a huge tour, The Temper Trap are releasing their latest single 'Science of Fear'. With fast rhythms and an indie/industrial style, it reminds the listener of Placebo with some interesting noises thrown in for good measure. This should be a good song to hear at one of their concerts. The new track, Science Of Fear, isn't exactly 'fresh' though. It has been circling around the internetzz for a little while AND was originally upped to their MySpace page about twelve months ago. Well, better than nothing I guess. Qquiet voices over a radio to an apocalyptic bridge section brings this song to life. 'Science of Fear' is a more than interesting tune which should be played to anyone who has lost faith in new music. It shows old styles are still alive but played in a modern context.
