The album was released by Reprise Records on May 15th, 2009, and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, as well as on the Rock, Active Rock, and Alternative charts. 21st Century Breakdown, which Rolling Stone has called 'a rock opera in which the rock always comes first,' also topped the charts in 24 countries including the UK, Canada, and Japan. 21st Century Breakdown is the Bay Area, CA, punk-rock band's ninth gold album in the U.S. including 1992's Kerplunk, 1994's Dookie, 1995's Insomniac, 1997's Nimrod, 2000's Warning, 2004's American Idiot, as well as two compilation albums: 1991's 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and 2001's International Superhits!
