LONDON, UK (Top40 Charts/ Ian De Sylva Official Website) - Ian De Sylva is a singer/songwriter by trade but a rock 'n' roller at heart. This is especially true with his brand new single 'Josephine'. He started his professional career as the main songwriter, guitarist and singer in 1990s Britpop act
Silver who signed to Rough Trade when he was 18 years old. They released their track 'Ten Seconds' through Rough Trade's famous 'Singles Club' and then went on to reach number 16 in the UK Independent Chart with both of their singles 'Silver Saturday' and 'Diamond' which led to Ian being dubbed as 'the next Ray Davies'.
Immediately, major labels demonstrated interest, and the band were signed to Warner via New York label Medicine. They recorded their debut album with producer Craig Leon (The Ramones, Talking Heads and Blondie) and toured with Elastica, The Cranberries, Auteurs and Gene. Of course, what story about a rock'n'roll artist signed to a major label isn't complete without the major's sub-label going bust leading to the band breaking up.
However, De Sylva carried on as a solo artist when Jon Eydmann (now late manager of Suede) got him signed to Fire Records to record his first solo album. Much of the material had been previously written but didn't fit with the Silver sound. After the rock'n'roll rollercoaster experience, Ian felt it was the right time to record an album reflecting his love of emotional songwriters such as Nick Drake and Roy Harper. He went on to tour the UK and America and record another 2 solo acoustic albums.
De Sylva took a break from music in the mid-Noughties, living in South America and obtaining a degree in art history. This exotic and enriching experience re-inspired the musical monster within him. He then returned to London to re-embrace his more rock'n'roll attitude forming a new band with bass player Sunil Andrews (brother of Lost actor Naveen Andrews) and drummer Alfie Tammaro (who also plays with The Ruling Class). After several gigs for Alan McGhee, they went on to record new single 'Josephine' along with 'Gas, Electricity and Phone' with producer Teo Miller (Placebo, Blur, Robert Plant).
The new record is a bass heavy rhythmic rocker that pulls in the alternative nuances of De Sylva's past but blends in garage and edgy blues flavours. Picture Brit-pop mixing in with more current American rock and a bit of Alabama 3 blues thrown in to create one bold release. Ian De Sylva is back, and it looks like his rock'n'roll spirit is too.
New single 'Josephine' with 'Gas, Electricity and Phone' is out on 5th April 2010. Ian performs at 93 Feet East on the 5th of March, and his single launch is also there on the 2nd April with rumours of an Alabama3 support for spring.
