New York, NY (Top40 Charts/ Basic NYC) - When you think about New York City and house music, one of the names that comes to mind is Def Mix. The pioneering DJ and production collective is a storied part of New York's house history, but as is too often the case with the Big Apple's hometown heroes, without a dancefloor to call 'home.' But that is starting to change, as Def Mix launches a new Sullivan Room residency in conjunction with Basic NYC. It all kicks off this Saturday, June 19th, with the return of the legendary
David Morales, who devastated the dancefloor with his venue debut in May. We couldn't be more excited to launch this new partnership.
In 2010, Basic NYC has stepped up its collaborations with Def Mix. Def Mix founding member Frankie Knuckles hit the club for the very first time in February, we featured Hector Romero in January, and in April. Satoshi Tomiie launched his own Sully residency. The Sullivan Room is a perfect fit for these artists, providing an intimate dancefloor and up-for-it crowd that melds well with the music-minded focus of the Def Mix DJs. This residency will feature the Def Mix DJs on a rotating basis, with David's hard-hitting house and tech fusion setting it off.
For as long as New York has had any kind of underground dance music culture, David Morales has been a part of it. As a young party-goer and fledgling DJ, he was a regular at legendary venues like the Loft, the Paradise Garage and the Sound Factory. In the early '90s, he held his own residency at the seminal New York venue the Red Zone, where he became a prolific remixer and producer. By his own personal estimate, Morales has guessed he put in over 100 hours a week in his studio then. It was during this time that he partnered with Judy Weinstein and Frankie Knuckles to form Def Mix, a unique group that would help establish the artists international recognition.
But all that hard work paid off for Morales as he became the go-to producer for remixing some pop music's biggest stars. He's added his touch to a huge range of artists, including U2, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Madonna and Diana Ross. He's had a particularly strong relationship with Mariah Carey, transforming many of her well known pop hits into house music anthems. As a remixer, he was awarded the 1998 Grammy for 'Remixer of the Year, Non-Classical', one of the few electronic music artists to earn such a award.
We'll be celebrating some birthdays at this party as well. Suneel from FunkyHouseMusic.com gets things going with a B-Day set, while Basic NYC regulars AB Logic (another birthday set) and Brian Anderson will be setting the room up for Morales. Basic NYC residents Sleepy & Boo will be on hand as well, with this event one of the highlights of their busy summer party schedule.
