The 10th Anniversary Future of Music Policy Summit puts artists front-and-center in discussions about music in our increasingly networked, digitized world. What strategies are working for musicians, and which are convenient fictions? How are savvy artists, managers and labels using technology to gain traction in a noisy media environment? What impact do policy and the courts have on the music ecosystem? Is the future of music actually video?
Summit 2010 puts laser-like focus on current artist issues. Take for example, information management - an inescapable aspect of the modern musician's career. Over the course of three days, attendees will learn how data, fan behavior and new analytics tools are reshaping long-held metrics of success.
One such conversation, 'Monsters of Data,' examines how consumers access music - lawfully and otherwise - and why understanding factors such as social network demographics, digital migration and peer-to-peer trends are crucial to addressing persistent music industry challenges. Experts such as Eric Garland of media measurement firm Big Champagne, musician and 'recovering' digital music executive Tim Quirk, singer-songwriter Erin McKeown, and Fortune Magazine's 'smartest academic in tech' danah boyd will talk about the insights that can be drawn from comprehending the situation as it is, and not as some may prefer it to be.
Summit 2010 will also provide musicians with information about navigating today's challenging and potentially rewarding creative landscape. A full day of artist-centric programming takes place on Sunday, October 3, with presentations and interactive discussions on subjects ranging from fan analytics to direct-to-consumer case studies to the possible impact of health care reform on musicians. Experts such as Ariel Hyatt of Ariel Publicity/Cyber PR and Ian Rogers of TopSpin Media will offer their insights about surviving (and thriving) in today's music business.
And no Future of Music Policy Summit would be complete without reflections on lessons learned and opportunities overlooked. FMC's decade of fostering dialogue has sparked numerous predictions about where the music industry might be heading. Have any of them come to pass? Which of today's educated guesses will become tomorrow's realities? What still stands in the way of progress?
Nearly a dozen 'supersessions' on topics ranging from new business models to international copyright issues to artist activism offer immediate access to crucial conversations about the future of music. Film screenings, cocktail parties and a live concert will provide Summit attendees with multiple recreational and networking opportunities.
