NEW YORK (Top40 Charts) - Yesterday in London, Jools Holland announced the winners of this year's Barclaycard Mercury Prize, which annually awards 'the best' album from the UK and Ireland.
The quiet and seemingly shy band members of critically acclaimed trio The XX took to the stage to accept the award for their debut album, titled xx, with guitarist and singer Romy Madley Croft saying, 'I genuinely wasn't expecting to hear our name, genuinely, genuinely.' Corinne Bailey Rae, Dizzee Rascal, Paul Weller and Mumford & Songs were among the 11 others artists The XX pipped to the post for this year's Prize. Released in August last year, The xx entered the chart at 36, slipping to 62 a week later. Showing that the Mercurys still have some power despite the naysayers which question its relevance, after the album's nomination it jumped from 44 to 16 in the charts, quickly becoming the favourite to win the prize.
