New York (Top40 Charts/ Skylar Entertainment) - Hyena Dog Robbery's music is a sleazy, hyper-aggressive bar fight between Einsturzende-Neubauten and a Bo-Diddley drunk on spy themes. HDR are set to release their debut album at the Garrison in Toronto on November 6, 2010. The band is the brainchild of drummer Karl Sweet and guitarist/vocalist Daryl Purdy, who met when Sweet was playing in the band ICHOR alongside Christian Lisso on bass and Charles G. Watson on keyboards. Purdy was hired to mix ICHOR opening for Test Department, when he discovered an instant chemistry with the band members. After a few years of intermittently playing together in the Goth outfit Masochistic Religion, Sweet and Purdy decided to pursue a project they talked of years earlier: a primitive rock n' roll band with tribal rhythm section. From there, Hyena Dog Robbery was born.
Over eighteen months, the band recorded their debut album experimenting with different instruments on songs inspired by the band's impulsive creativity. "If you really want to fuck it all up, just bring a chord change into it," says Lisso, summing up his philosophy. According to Purdy, Hyena Dog Robbery's lyrics are an equally as impulsive stream of consciousness, and carry with them the reoccurring theme of 'bad men' with issues, he explains, ''Bang' is about a bad man trying to be good. 'Dirty Thing' is about a bad man trying to be good...but has no idea how to do It. 'I Got Ways' is about a bad man trying to get with a bad woman. 'Whiskey Sawdust' is about a bad man and a bad woman together, for a time. It does not go well. Need I go on?'
Hyena Dog Robbery's organic and collaborative writing process is coupled with the raw energy of their live shows. 'The lyrics on the record evolved out of the improvised lyrics of the live show,' says Purdy. 'Live music should be a process of creation-not memorization.'
While they resist being pigeon-holed exclusively into Toronto's emerging 'Crime Wave' scene, Hyena Dog Robbery's sound is referred to by music writer Donna Lypchuck as 'Music to Kill By.' This is heavy praise for these high-octane agro-sleaze rockers.
'Four Men dressed in Johnny Cashless black play simplistic, hypnotic Birthday Party 'style suicide notes' plundered with primal, primitive and vulgar aural autisms that eerily echo rough sex from a Russ Meyers or David Lynch film.' - Donna Lypchuck
