Los Angeles, CA (Top40 Charts/ CineMedia Promotions) - Lakeshore Records will release the Legacy - Original Motion Picture
Soundtrack available digitally on October 19, 2010. Mark Kilian (La Mission, Rendition) composed the original music.
'The score features an exciting blend of retro flavored orchestral writing reminiscent of Bernard Herrmann's work with Hitchcock and a modern electronica sensibility applied to the writing and manipulation of acoustic and electronic instruments and percussion,' said Kilian
South African born Mark Kilian started his music career as a jazz pianist working in and around his homeland. He played with the Brubecks, Shirley Bassy, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Airto Moreira and many local jazz and rock outfits and also played a lot of musical theater. After completing a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Piano, he went on to complete a Masters Degree in Composition and Film Scoring. Based on his academic success, he won a few prestigious scholarships and headed for LA where he attended USC's graduate program 'Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television.' He started working in the Hollywood movie business immediately upon graduation, writing, orchestrating, conducting and programming on movies like The Matrix: Reloaded, Species, Copycat and The Animatrix.
Kilian composed his first score in 1997 and since then has done many features and television, most notably Tsotsi which won the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 2005. His most recent film is The Ward with legendary horror director John Carpenter. Others include Rendition, Traitor, La Mission, and Before the Rains. His TV work includes ABC's Daybreak and Jake In Progress, Fox's Kitchen Confidential and countless high profile TV commercials for Coke, Amex, Toyota, Microsoft and the memorable Apple iMac spinning color spot.
His non film work includes 2 albums as The Gravy Street, 2 albums as Ape Quartet (all receiving radio play), string arrangements for Glenn Hughes from Deep Purple, a KCRW sponsored remix of an Ozomatli song with Anne Litt and music for a Getty Villa exhibition The Aztec Pantheon.
Idris Elba portrays Malcom Gray, a decorated anti-terrorist black-ops soldier. When a military effort to tackle and arms dealer ends in Gray's capture and torture, he later finds himself back in his Brooklyn apartment struggling to overcome the effects of severe paranoia and anxiety. While isolated, he reflects on the inconsistencies of the assignment gone wrong and begins to question the loyalty of his own brother, a senator on the verge of a presidential campaign.
To give the sense of psychological breakdown and the loss of reality,' described Kilian, 'the music never lets the audience settle into a comfortable thematic development pattern, but rather keeps the 'nail on chalkboard' idea throughout where many sounds are not quite 'right.''
