Words" at Davies Symphony Hall on April 21, 2011. This concert also marks the debut of Dr. Timothy Seelig as the chorus' new artistic director and conductor ushering in a new era for the SFGMC.
"When Tim joined us at the beginning of the year, we knew that we were in for a treat, but nothing could have prepared us for the thrill ride we are now enjoying under his gifted direction," says Michael Tate, board president, who also sings in the Chorus.
Seelig's reputation for delivering jaw-dropping choral experiences inspired a record-breaking sixty-eight new members to join the Chorus at the start of the year, swelling the ranks of the world's first gay chorus to over 280.
"It's a breath-taking sound," says Seelig, adding: "We are going to knock this first concert out of the park April 21."
The singers are right behind him. Long-time member, Eddy Skees says: "It's alive! We are feeling such vigor, passion and joy at rehearsals - you can almost touch it. Our audience is in for a real treat!"
"The enthusiasm we are all feeling about the future of SFGMC and this concert specifically, has a great deal to do with the music we have selected," Seelig explains: "We actually began with the texts. The music fell into place after that." Seelig has selected ravishingly gorgeous music set the words of cultural icons such as Eckhart Tolle and contemporary heroes like Barack Obama. The concert, called simply, "Words", will, enthuses Seelig, "feature a fast-moving multi-media presentation, an exquisite hand-picked chamber orchestra provided by the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and make full use of Symphony Hall's glorious Rufatti Organ."
The singers themselves can't wait - always a good sign. Season tickets have exceeded expectations and together with pre-sales to the singers over 34% of the house is already filled before tickets go on sale to the general public on Saturday, March 12. "We'll be packed to the gills on April 21 and Tim and the men of the Chorus will deliver a never-to-be-forgotten mountain-top experience," says the Chorus' executive director, Teddy Witherington: "The Chorus is undergoing a renaissance under Tim's superlative leadership and you will not want to miss a single note."
