Maxwell earned coast-to-coast raves for his last tour in 2009/2010, which started in theaters and after massive fan demand, ended moving up to a run of arenas, selling hundreds of thousands of tickets and capped by two sold-out nights at his hometown Madison Square Garden.

The Chicago Tribune commented, "He worked his band like Cab Calloway or James Brown, the horns slicing and dicing with Ginsu-knife precision, a Hammond organ taking us to church, the drums peppering everything with syncopated beats. Maxwell proved more than capable of taking the abundant personality and intimacy of his theater shows to a bigger stage."

The NY Post wrote that "Maxwell became the quintessential soul brother. The singer stepped into a lone spotlight in the dark Garden, half singing, half preaching as if he were possessed by the spirit of Sam Cooke"

The Atlanta Journal Constitution said of his show "Within mere seconds, Maxwell was turning up the heat -- running up and down stairs on the set, sliding across the floor."

Maxwell's last album 'BLACKsummers'night' (2009) debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts with the best first-week sales of his career, a triumphant return after 8 years out of the limelight. USA Today, the New York Times, andthe Washington Post named it the best album of 2009, and it won a Grammy for Best R&B Album.
