Since the days when hip hop culture first arrived in Australia, there are many who've become obsessed with the traditional four elements; B-boying, Emceeing, Deejaying and Graffiti. Def Wish Cast epitomise the whole package, with extreme dedication to all the vocations. They symbolise Hip Hop in its purest form. They created something localised that was revered and is now mythologised: they are Def Wish Cast; they are Australian; they are Hiphop.
Kicking off in 1990, Def Wish Cast are the true pioneers of the Australian scene, becoming the voice of the voiceless youth of Western Sydney. With their command of the four elements, the DWC quickly became known amongst the underground scenes of many countries with their seminal track Proppa Ragga coming in at #2 on Norway's
Rainbow FM Hip Hop show with Tommy Tee, making it the first Australian hip hop track to break into the international radio charts.
Following that success, 1992 saw DWC releasing one of the hallmarks by which all Australian hip hop would be judged. The 15 track Knights of the Underground Table was unleashed, featuring the turntable and production skills of DJ Vame. It was an instant classic, and the first real album from an Australian Hip Hop crew. With this album under their belt, DWC started getting support acts for international artists such as the Beastie Boys, Helmet, Young
Black Teenagers, Wreckx n' Effect, and many more, releasing new tracks, appearing on international compilations and continuing to innovate and inspire as the new generation of Australian hip hop artists including Hilltop Hoods, Bliss n Eso, Downsyde, Funkoars and many more were born.
Fast forward 20 years and Def Wish Cast are still pioneering Aussie hip hop. Their reformation in 2007 saw the release of their first album in 13 years, The Legacy Continues, national touring, and an award for Best Hip Hop Group at the 1st Annual Urban
Music Awards.
In 2012, Def Wish Cast has returned with force! Their upcoming album, Evolution Machine, has already delivered two hit singles. Their first single "Dun Proppa" was an instant hit on triple j, followed up with the latest smash "
Forever", proving that the band are as relevant in 2012's hip hop landscape as they were in 1992.
The album Evolution Machine will hit the streets on May 18 with production on the album handled by the likes of Aria Award winning producer M-Phazes, Plutonic Lab (Muph n Plutonic), DJ JS1 (Rocksteady Crew / NYC), Katalyst, Dave Atkins and Katch (Resin Dogs), Dizz1, JP & Brass, Sereck, and an original DWC member, DJ Vame. The album also features a new addition to the DWC family,
Thomas Rock, who takes on the voice of the machine, through his old school electro-inspired vocoder skills.
Other guests on the album include Brisbane's own human beatbox, Tom Thumb, the soulful sounds of Joyride & Thavy Ear, funk-fused guitars from Xela (Good Buddha / Space Invadas), legendary hardcore-punk front-man
Scotty Mac (Toe 2 Toe) & more. Expect a very musical, very diverse album from the kings of Oz hip hop, who are back with force, ready to claim their throne in 2012.
