Modern Drummer magazine asked their readers to vote for their favorite drummers across a wide variety of categories and genres, and they did—in huge numbers. This year, dozens of drummers who publish instructional books and DVDs with Alfred
Music Publishing were represented in nearly every category area by the voting public.
In the "Educational Book" category, solo artist, clinician, and author Ari Hoenig was among the winners for his critically acclaimed book SYSTEMS, Book 1: Drumming Technique and Melodic Jazz Independence. The instructional resource imparts Hoenig's performance techniques which take aim at practice fatigue and performance plateaus with engaging exercises that foster coordination and inspire creativity on the drums. Performer, clinician, and author, Florian Alexandru-Zorn, was also one of the winners in the "Educational Book" category for his The Complete Guide to Playing Brushes release. The DVD film combines candid, wide-ranging conversations with Martin's first drum teacher, Allen Herman, and beautifully filmed performances of Martin's compositions for percussion ensemble and improvised trap set solos and duets. Drums was recently awarded the "Silver Medal for
Excellence in a
Music Documentary" at the 2011 Park City Film
