New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Soul star
Macy Gray is joining
David Murray's Big Band for a 3-night run at The Iridium Jan 11-13. Murray, a Village Voice Musician of the Decade honoree and Grammy-winning saxophonist, composed a brand new repertory for the show that includes bold new arrangements of Gray's hits and brand new original compositions written specifically for the show.
"Heʼs just a very accomplished musician who knows everything there is to know about orchestrating," Gray told the New York Times of Murray. "On the Questlove Afro-Picks project I loved his arrangements…sounds that Iʼd never heard before."
Murray and Gray offered a taste of their collaboration in
Europe this year with performances at Paris' Jazz A La Villette, the London Jazz Festival, and the Netherlands' famed North Sea Jazz Festival, but January's Iridium run will mark the New York premiere of the show, which features a 16-piece band.
Gray also joined Murray in the studio to contribute vocals to the song "Be My Monster Love," which will be performed by the Big Band at The Iridium and will appear on Murray's new album of the same name, to be released fall 2013 on Motema.
