Vancouver, BC, Canada (Top40 Charts/ WiFi PR Group) Canadian music fans may recognize
Daisy Blue Gröff from her long stint in the band Painting Daisies. That band was, in Daisy's words, "prairie dogs and prairie gods of the Canadian music scene for over a decade." That's a good run, but now
Daisy is flying solo over that prairie. Her debut record as an individual performer, "Sparrow in a Cyclone," was produced by the Grammy-nominated producer, Joby Baker (Alex Cuba, Cowboy Junkies) who also played on the album (strings, keys, drums and bass).
Daisy already has plans to record the follow-up, "Buried in The Sky." The new album will again be produced by Baker.
Painting Daisies accomplished a lot during their tenure as a band. Not only do they have their own card in Canadian Trivial Pursuit, the band also had the good fortune to tour Iceland, Holland, Germany, Belgium and the US, as well as Canada. Their album "Flambescence" won an ARIA award for 'Best Folk Album' and their second release "Fortissimo" earned them 'Entertainers of the Year' recognition at the Prairie
Music Awards. They also won the CBC's 'Great Canadian
Music Dream' competing with 4,000 other musical acts. Their third album, "Phonography," was nominated for a Gemini Award. That's a lot of history, and that's a lot to live up to as a solo performer. Maybe
Daisy feels like a sparrow in a cyclone herself, but her past life performing in that band has certainly prepared her for her current role as a solo artist.
Daisy's voice has been compared to Margot Timmins of Cowboy Junkies and
Sharleen Spiteri (Texas) and her lyrics to Grant Lee Phillips. Her guitar playing has been compared to Jeff Buckley, although Groff readily admits she has a ways to go to equal that late performer's proficiency on the instrument. She is influenced musically by Chris Whitley,
Daniel Lanois, Michael Penn, Charlie Sexton and Doyle Bramhall II. Her songs are inspired by lovers and relationships, her travels around the world, death, drugs and the break up of her band. She has shared the stage with Eagle Eye Cherry and Chumbawumba.
Daisy's music is available through iTune, Indie Pool, Reverbnation and CD Baby. You can buy physical copies of her album at her live performances.
