The Independent (UK) gave Hoodoo a rave, four-star review, and said it "may be Tony Joe White's best album."
"The real king of swamp pop has always been Tony Joe White," writes Grant Britt in No Depression. "White's still able to dig plenty of mucky treasures from the swamp, fit for a king and plenty good enough for the rest of us to enjoy."
The Los Angeles Times recently premiered the album's debut single and opening cut "The Gift," which you can check out here: https://lat.ms/13A3kEt. Brian Mansfield of USA Today premiered the track "Holed Up" and said it "has the vintage swamp-rock sound that White made famous in the '60s and '70s."
Culled from an initial stack of roughly seventeen tunes, the nine songs that comprise Hoodoo come alive in the haunting atmosphere and intensity of the stripped-down recording process. Cut mostly live to tape - vocals and all - much of Hoodoo consists of first takes.
Tony Joe White is best know for his hits "Polk Salad Annie" and "Rainy Night In Georgia." Through the years, his songs have been recorded by everyone from
Tina Turner to
Elvis Presley to Ray Charles.
