CHICAGO, IL. (Top40 Charts/ Western Publicity) Archie Powell and the Exports have emerged from Chrome
Attic with their third album! Produced by John Alvin (Surfer Blood, Netherfriends, Santah), the album is comprised of 12 powerful new songs that reprise the irresistible pop hooks of their previous work in a darker, noisey framework. Expect the album in early 2014. To celebrate their release from the dark confines of the recording studio, the band is hitting the road for a tour through midwest and southeast en route to CMJ.
The Exports are a group effort but as the songwriter and frontman of the band, it's inevitable that it be a strong reflection on Powell. "I guess the duality between a pop rock aesthetic and the darker lyrical content kind of speaks to how I carry myself socially. I'm a pretty upbeat individual if you give me a quick once-over, but there are a few poor souls out there who have clearance cards to the super classified bad parts of my brain. They exist, you just gotta dig deeper, I guess.
Praise for Archie Powell & the Exports:
"Powell and his Exports pair crunchy guitar riffs with great song titles…Its party rock that is, in fact, rock music." - FUSE TV's 30 Must See Artists of CMJ 2012
"With simple melodies and sardonic lyrics, Archie Powell and the Exports' new album, Great Ideas in Action, may well be the soundtrack to this summer." - NPR's World Cafe
"The rave-up "Crazy Pills" rides a driving organ riff to frantic heights, with Powell howling above chugging guitars and pounding drums. It's acerbic in a Costello vein, carrying a bite to match the sharp music." - AV Club
The band's sophomore album, in contrast, is anchored by songs that touch on the difficulties of landing a job in a down economy ("Job Fair") and the ways day-to-day life can gradually grind people down ("Metronome"). Instead of moping, however, Powell and his mates transform even their most mundane, soul-crushing experiences into hummable power-pop gems. Feel free to sing along."
REDEYE CHICAGO's Best of 2012
"Their songs have all the good stuff crammed into three or so minutes: boundless enthusiasm/joy/ spirit, hooks on top of hooks on top of hooks, killer sing- along choruses, and a welcome sense of humor." Providence Phoenix
