New York, NY (Top40 Charts/ Missing Piece Group) On February 4th, New Brunswick's own Matt Andersen released his 8th studio album, Weightless, via True North Records. The album was received with great praise and will see a physical release on April 1st in North America.
In advance of its release, American Songwriter offered an exclusive stream of the album which you can listen to here: https://bit.ly/1ewuKg8. Nina Small of American Songwriter said Matt Andersen "showcases his talent for blending unique blues and roots influenced guitar playing with high quality songwriting."
Alysha Rendflesh of Blues Rock Review called Weightless a "tremendous album" and said that Andersen "brings emotion to the song that many singers wish they could bring to the table."
Writing in Exclaim!, Joshua Kloke said Weightless "finds the New Brunswick-bred Andersen taking big steps to broaden his appeal and solidify his status as one of the country's most engaging songwriters."
The 12 tracks that comprise Weightless showcase Andersen's unparalleled dexterity on the guitar along with some of his best songwriting to date. The album was produced by Grammy-winning producer and musician Steve Berlin (Los Lobos, Deer Tick), who enlisted Neko Case's right hand man and guitarist Paul
Rigby to compliment Andersen.
Andersen's extensive discography boasts seven albums, including one Christmas album, one live collection, and two discs with harmonica player Mike Stevens. His most recent album, 2011's Coal Mining Blues, was produced by Colin Linden and was recorded at Levon Helm's studio in Woodstock, N.Y.
His reputation as a bluesman won him the 2013 European Blues Award for Best Solo/Acoustic Act, three Maple Blues Awards in 2012, and the 2010 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. "The blues is a big part of what I do, and in my solo show some tunes are straight-up blues, for sure," he says. "But I would never stand beside B.B. King and say, 'I play blues, too.' None of my albums are blues albums—I've won blues awards with them, but I wouldn't say they're blues albums."
Andersen is set to open for
