NEW YORK (Top40 Charts) - U2 have appealed to their fans to make a donation to the AMERICAN RED CROSS to help the victims of the terrorist attacks in NEW YORK and WASHINGTON.

The band, who are due to return to North America for more live shows in the autumn, have posted a message on the official U2 website, www.u2.com, saying any fans wanting to help can donate to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

The posting reads: "Like everyone else we are in shock at the events of this week in the US. We can only imagine the terrible pain of so many. The people of the US have always been close to U2 and at u2.com, along with other U2 sites, we extend our sympathy and condolences to all those affected. If you have friends or family who have been touched by this tragedy, we are thinking of you.

"Without in any way minimising the experiences of anyone connected with those who have been killed and injured, we know that wherever we are in the world, we are all in this together.

"If you are looking for an immediate and effective way of helping at this time you can make a donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Donations can be made via Amazon.com, which is waiving its usual fees.

"All donated money will go to the Red Cross to help victims of this and other tragedies."
