Orba Squara's second release The Trouble With Flying is set for a July release digitally with the CD available on Res Freq. The 13-song album follows Orba's 2007 debut release sunshyness. Mitch Davis, who performs as Orba Squara, wrote and recorded all of the songs on the album at his NYC studio with a guest appearance from 80's rock legend Billy Squier ('The Stroke,' 'My Kind of Lover,' etc...) In addition to the new record, Mitch undertook the ambitious, creative, and critically praised The Trouble with Flying web project.
sunshyness was a true solo project with every instrument and voice on the album performed by Mitch, but Flying includes contributions from Mitch's childhood rock'n'roll hero Billy Squier. At a fortuitous backstage meeting, Mitch handed Billy a copy of sunshyness and a week later the two were planning on recording together. The middle section of 'Tell Me' was written specifically for Billy and he contributes guitar and vocals to the first single 'The Trouble with Flying.' Mitch is currently recording new material with Billy. Orba Squara opens for Billy July 24 at the The Capital One Bank Theatre at Westbury in Westbury, NY.
The Trouble With Flying web documentary, view at www.orbasquara.com, is unique website created in support of the new release. The site presents the album as a road trip with photos and graphics from the bus tour that Mitch , bandmate Ze Luis and friends took from NYC to Portland with stops in Nashville, Austin, Eureka, CA and other cities exploring what is missed when flying between the coasts. The songs from Flying soundtrack the document. The site provides context for the album with thoughts on recording, the trip, lyrics, Melville and Thoreau, ribs and biscuits, and footage of performing in the streets fill this colorful and insightful journal; it is a great introduction to Orba Squara as well.
Orba Squara had incredible success with licensing the songs from the debut sunshyness. Along with Apple's selection of 'Perfect Timing (This Morning)' as the theme for its worldwide TV iPhone campaign, Frito Lay, Expedia, Saturn, Goodyear, and Sun Chips also used songs from the record. Mitch says that sunshyness was an organic shedding of his previous electronic recordings and Flying builds upon this with inspiration coming from new instrumentation including sitar and instruments bought on a trip to Japan, as well as more amplification and effects. Whereas the debut was a conscious effort, according to Mitch, Flying 'just happened' with the songwriting and recording beginning almost immediately after the release of sunshyness. The single 'The Trouble with Flying' and a tongue-in-cheek cover of Lady Gaga's 'Poker Face' are available on iTunes now.
