BURBANK, CA (Warner Bros. Records) - THE CRIMEA, one of the UK's most critically lauded new bands, has signed to Warner Bros. Records in the U.S. and will release their debut full-length album, "TRAGEDY ROCKS," early in 2005. A full tour will follow.
In the meantime, the band's new British import 5-song EP, "LOTTERY WINNERS ON ACID," will be released on October 5, 2004 on Double Dragon Music (www.doubledragonmusic.com). Each of the original songs was recorded and produced by themselves at home.
The Crimea will play three U.S. shows in October, culminating in a pair of appearances at this year's CMJ Music Marathon in New York City. To celebrate these events, the new EP will be available for sale at the shows and on the band's Web site: www.thecrimea.net.
Hyper-literate singer-songwriter/front man Davey MacManus has an unusual way with words and an uncanny ability to turn debauched, bitter-funny tales of mean streets and meaner romance into lush and lacerating rock 'n' roll. Irish-born, London-based MacManus has already authored a book of poems and short stories entitled "Unamazing Disgraces," released last year through UK's Shiny Beast Publishing under the alias of Kernel Krok. He does not use the Internet, nor does he listen to other bands, but he and the band are interested in creating music that is "timeless - lyrically, musically and aesthetically."
The story so far would indicate they are on the right path: "The Crimea work hard, gig plenty, and play catchy, intense songs about over-reaching, under-achieving and drinking too much... it's a satisfying mix and The Crimea do it better than most. Their last London show was a minor classic." - Time Out London
"The Crimea's wistful ethereality is delightful in its twisted psychedelic tales of love gone awry... the monstrous peaks implode into despairing troughs, though they never lose a certain fighter's survival instinct, and the melancholy is never less than jauntily positive." - Kerrang
"Crucially he knows when to temper the unburdening of curdled angst with humor, and when to allow screaming cacophony to slide into lyricism." - N.M.E.
