MIAMI, Fl. (MTVLA) - MTV Networks Latin America announced today the nominees for the second annual 'MTV Video Music Awards Latin America' (VMALAs). Tied with five nominations each are Mexicans Cafi Tacuba, Natalia Lafourcade and Molotov, and Chilean band La Ley, followed by Argentine Gustavo Cerati, Colombian Juanes, and Mexican band Mana with four and ex-Fabulosos Cadillacs' Vicentico with three nominations. In addition, it was announced that the show will feature live performances by Alejandro Sanz, Sum 41, La Ley, Iggy Pop and Natalia Lafourcade. The event will broadcast live from Miami Beach's Jackie Gleason Theater on Thursday, October 23rd, 2003 at 9:00PM ET (8:00 PM Mexico, 9:00 PM, Chile and 10:00 PM Argentina). Additional performers and presenters will be announced shortly.

'The fact that the second VMALAs are happening at the same time of MTV's 10th anniversary in Latin America gives us creative elements to come up with an extraordinary show', said Charlie Singer, SVP Programming and Production, MTV Networks Latin America. 'The VMALAs will be a huge celebration and a look back to our 10-year history in the region, as well as a look forward to what can still be expected from MTV and the Latin American music community in the future.'

The 'MTV Video Music Awards Latin America' nominees in 16 categories were selected by a 'Music and Video Academy' comprised of music industry professionals and MTV viewers. Ballots were cast via Internet. The winner for each category will be chosen by viewers who will cast their votes exclusively online at MTV Latin America's website MTVla.com between September 11th and October 8th 2003. Harris Interactive, a worldwide market research and consulting firm, acting as a private auditor will tabulate the results for the 'MTV Video Music Awards Latin America 2003.'

Additionally, MTV created the new category of 'Independent Artist' whose nominees were selected by the channel. The winner will be selected by a reduced 'Music and Video Academy' formed by Latin American musicians and record company executives, as well as MTV talent executives from around the world.

'It's great to see such an interesting balance of established and up and coming talent in this year's nominations', said Jose Tillan, VP of Music and Artist Relations, MTV Networks Latin America. 'I'm sure this year's show will reflect our 10th anniversary celebration by capturing this balance and creating some memorable moments!'

Charlie Singer, SVP of Programming and Production, MTV Networks Latin America will executive produce. Audrey Morrissey (a veteran of many MTV productions and award shows, and producer of 'Alejandro Sanz MTV Unplugged,' 'La Ley MTV Unplugged' and last year's VMALAs) will serve as producer; Manny Rodriguez ('Alejandro Sanz MTV Unplugged,' 'La Ley MTV Unplugged') will direct and Jos?
