LOS ANGELES (Top40 Charts/ Nickelodeon) - Kids thanked their stars tonight at Nickelodeon's 2008 Kids' Choice Awards, and lucky luminaries Johnny Depp,
Jessica Alba, Eddie Murphy, Miley Cyrus,
Drake Bell, The Jonas Brothers,
Chris Brown - and more - clinched coveted orange Blimps during the live telecast, Saturday, March 29 (8-9:30 p.m. ET/tape delay PT).
Hosted by Jack
Black and spotlighting the hottest stars of TV, movies, music and sports, the kudo/mess-fest at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion - "where Hollywood meets the slime" - gave new meaning to "Go Green!" Not only did glorious slime showers drench gleeful kids and celebs throughout the show, for the first time three interactive celebrity slime stunts, hosted by Laila Ali and featuring Akon,
Usher and
Heidi Klum, wowed the crowd and led to the longest slime time in history - and the climactic superstar sliming of Orlando Bloom and host Black.
More than doubling last year's record-breaking record, 86,708,020 million kids cast votes March 3-29 in 18 categories to honor their favorites. Votes were cast via https://www.nick.com - https://www.nicktropolis.com - https://www.turbonick.com and for the first time via Nick's new mobile website (wap.nick.com).
Tally yielded treasured blimps for Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End) and Jessica Alba (Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer) as Favorite Movie Actor and Favorite Movie Actress. Alvin and the Chipmunks and Ratatouille respectively grabbed Favorite Movie and Favorite Animated Movie. Eddie Murphy clinched a Blimp as Favorite Voice in an Animated Movie (Shrek the Third). Top TV awards went to American Idol as Favorite Reality Show, to Drake & Josh as Favorite TV Show and to Avatar: The Last Airbender as Favorite Animated Show. Drake Bell (Drake & Josh) collected his third consecutive Blimp as Favorite TV Actor, and last year's Favorite TV Actress, Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana), nabbed a pair for Favorite TV Actress and Favorite Female Singer. Tony Hawk and Danica Patrick scored for Favorite Male Athlete and Favorite Female Athlete. In music, Chris Brown seized Favorite Male Singer, and The Jonas Brothers triumphed as a group; Avril Lavigne's Girlfriend won for Favorite Song. The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling notched Favorite Book honors.
Setting the stage for the revelry and mess, cameras captured host Jack Black backstage as he stunned his onetime School of Rock co-star, Miranda Cosgrove (Nickelodeon's iCarly), with his spiritual and physical quest - part maharishi and part The Six Million Dollar Man - to "become one with the slime" and the best Kids' Choice host in history. Then, caped and clad in slime green, he bounded onstage and pumped up the volume with I Was Made for Sliming You, musically paving the way for pop sensations Miley Cyrus and Nickelodeon's The Naked Brothers Band. Superstar Cyrus excited the kid crowd with a lavish production number of Girl's Night Out from her concert tour/movie, and The Naked Brothers Band rocked with I Don't Wanna Go to School while skateboarders, BMX bikers and in-line skaters leaped and played with eye-popping moves.
Laila Ali provided colorful commentary for not one but three interactive spectacular slime stunts. Swinging on a crane for Celebrity Slime Darts, Heidi Klum came through with flying colors as she popped scores of slime-filled balloons on a giant wall. Voting at nick.com, kids picked her popping mode: a giant butt pad covered in spikes. For Scuba Sumo Slimo, scuba diver stepped aside for sumo wrestler, after kids selected him at nick.com, and Usher blasted a high-pressure hose at the human slime target: The stunt man slid, flew and rolled through a shuffleboard point set-up to determine "slimage" for the giant tank onstage. And in Slime-o-lition Derby, Akon hopped into the bumper car shaped like a giant Jack Black bobble-head doll and zigzagged through an obstacle course, thwacking slime filled targets and topping the slime-o-meter. Kids picked the vehicle on nick.com that gave more bang for the buck and more slime for the tank.
Filled to the brim, the giant slime tank was poised, goo-d and ready to spill as veteran slime recipient Jack Black and Orlando Bloom levitated upward in their slime seats to make Nick history. "It's the whole reason I became an actor - to take part of the biggest celebrity sliming in Kids' Choice history," said Bloom. Their climactic superstar sliming was the longest in show history, and Bloom joined an elite fraternity of stars who reveled in the slime experience including Vince Vaughn, Robin Williams, Johnny Depp, Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey, James Earl Jones, Rosie O'Donnell, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller.
In a show highlight, The Wannabe Award, an annual honor bestowed on a celebrity role model who kids most "want to be," was presented to Cameron Diaz - former Kids' Choice Awards host (2004)/Burp Award winner (2001) - by Ashton Kutcher. The presentation was green-themed in keeping with Diaz's laudable conservation/environmental efforts, and in accepting, she exclaimed, "This is the biggest honor of my entire life! Kids are the future ... and I'm honored to inspire you to change this world." She prompted the crowd to shout, "We are the future and the future is bright!" and urged them to "Go out and make this a better world."
Burping was music to kids' ears this year, as celebrities who visited the orange carpet Burp Zone punctuated the song Y.M.C.A. with burps, and all of the belchers appeared in a resounding montage that showcased their efforts - and took burping to a new level. Past proud best belchers include Cameron Diaz, Jessica Alba and Steve Irwin (shared honor), Justin Timberlake (two-time winner) and Hugh Jackman.
In addition, the star-studded telecast featured celebrity participants including Will Smith, Steve Carell, Shia LaBeouf, Harrison Ford, Chris Brown, Janet Jackson, James Marsden, Heidi Klum, Drake Bell, Hayden Panettiere, Ashlee Simpson, Miranda Cosgrove, America Ferrera, Abigail Breslin, Brendan Fraser, Amy Poehler, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Howie Mandel, Josh Peck, Ryan Seacrest, Devon Werkheiser, Ryan Sheckler, Pete Wentz, Rihanna and many others.
