LONDON, UK (Radio 2) - The band's 1975 hit heads a list compiled to mark the 50th anniversary of the UK charts, to be broadcast by BBC Radio 2 on Saturday night.

The operatic rock song, which regularly makes it to the top of listeners' charts, came in ahead of two other usual suspects - John Lennon's Imagine and Hey Jude by The Beatles - placed second and third.

Fellow former Beatle George Harrison's My Sweet Lord was placed at number five.
The Beatles as a group claim 14 of the top 100, way ahead of any other act. Only three of their number ones failed to make it into the list.

Contemporary stars barely get a look in, with only four tracks from the past decade making it into the entire top 100.
Only Kylie Minogue's Can't Get You Out Of My Head, Elvis's revamped A Little Less Conversation, Oasis's Don't Look Back In Anger and U2's Beautiful Day represent the past 10 years.
The most contemporary track in the first 25 is Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas, dating to 1984.

Bohemian Rhapsody last topped a major national poll in May based on more than 30,000 entries compiled by the Guinness World Records British Hit Singles book.
The track topped the charts twice, despite record label bosses at EMI initially being reluctant even to issue the single.

There have been 941 number one songs since the national UK pop charts began 50 years ago. The Official UK Charts Company, which compiles the weekly listing, compiled nearly 190,000 votes to draw up its definitive list.

The 50 highest were counted down in a Radio 2 show, The Greatest Number Ones Of All Time, by DJ Richard Allinson on Saturday 9 November.
