Juan Carlos Polo Album Release Concert At Smoke In NYC
New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Peruvian drummer Juan Carlos Polo celebrates the release of his debut album Insomnio, on OneTrickDog* Records, with a special three set evening at Smoke Jazz & Supper Club on February 1, 2017. This evening will also feature Cali O'Doherty (Piano), Tamir Shmerling (Bass), Wayne Tucker (Trumpet) and special guests. Carlos is a percussionist, composer and educator, trained at The National Conservatory of Music in Peru where he is currently a professor in the outreach program. A versatile contemporary musician, he has recorded over fifteen albums with some of the most respected modern Peruvian artists from diverse genres and styles, inluding La Mente and Inity Band, backing bands for reggae stars: Clinton Fearon (the Gladiators), Calton Coffie (Inner Circle), Junior Reid (Black Uhuru), Anthony B, Mykel Rose, and Pablo Moses. Insomnio offers a unique take on contemporary jazz, incorporating elements of Peruvian rhythms from the coast and the highlands in a fusion with jazz modalities. Juan Carlos has described the tracks as "inspired by his experiences, feelings and dreams," and as "an expression of his effort to pursue freedom for the musician and the audience."

Classically trained, Juan Carlos has participated as a soloist in the International Contemporary Classical Music Festival as well as the International Percussion Festival of Lima. He has led different jazz projects, including Kambujo, one of the first Peruvian groups focused on Peruvian music and modern jazz.
Smoke is located at 2751 Broadway between 105 and 106 Streets. Set times for this engagement are 7, 9 & 10:30 pm. There is a $12.00 music charge. www.smokejazz.com
