CHERRY HILL, N.J. (Camden County announcement) - An unprecedented amount of music and other family-oriented entertainment is poised to enhance the already magnificent parks of Camden County this summer. And it won't cost a thing to experience.

South Jersey residents will feel like they're in their own backyards - and they may as well be - as they enjoy the stellar and diverse line-up of first-rate concert attractions being presented FREE throughout the season by the Camden County Board of Freeholders. Indeed, something can be found in any number of outdoor settings this summer on just about any night of the week.

The summer entertainment slate is anchored by several concert series offering top name national acts in a multitude of musical genres, plus an extensive schedule of free family fun including outdoor "drive-in" style movies, workshops, music and more. The COOPER RIVER PARK CONCERT SERIES, the SUNSET JAZZ SERIES at Wiggins Waterfront Park, the SUNDOWN MUSIC SERIES in Haddon Heights and the ON THE ROAD VARIETY CONCERT SERIES combine to bring more than two dozen concert events surveying everything classic rock to the classical offerings of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
"The concert series is a tremendous service the Camden County Freeholders provide our residents all summer long - and it's all free!," says Freeholder Deputy Director Ed McDonnell, liaison to the Camden County Department of Parks & Recreation. "The range of concerts offered in Camden County - by established stars and up-and-coming talent - is outstanding. The musical diversity, performed at a variety of open-air venues, is terrific, and offers something for residents of all ages."
"Put simply," he added, "Camden County's fine, free entertainment series is unmatched in South Jersey, if not the state."

The centerpiece of the COOPER RIVER PARK CONCERT SERIES - and the summer - is an unprecedented Independence Day extravaganza that kicks off July with a bang. The celebration explodes on the Fourth of July when '80s pop icon and certified rock 'n' roll superstar PAT BENATAR takes the stage, followed by a spectacular fireworks display. Other Cooper River Park highlights include RONNIE SPECTOR of The Ronettes fame, performing August 5, and a night of COUNTRY ON THE COOPER, hosted by 92.5 XTU on August 12. Appearances by JOHNNY MAESTRO & THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE (July 8), "THE RETURN" hailed as the most authentic Beatles tribute band in the world (July 15), FRALINGER STRING BAND (July 22), THE CITY RHYTHM ORCHESTRA, presenting a tribute to Count Basie and Friends: "Jumpin at the Woodside" (July 29), and "NIGHT CLUB NIGHTS," featuring the Carmen Dee Orchestra, Billy Ruth tribute to Frank Sinatra and the comedy of Lou Marks and Joey M. (August 19) round out the schedule of cool music at the Cooper River Park during those hot summer nights. Closing the explosive summer concert series on August 26 is the classic folk-rock of the KINGSTON TRIO.

The 13th annual SUNSET JAZZ SERIES at Wiggins Waterfront Park offers the smooth sounds of world-renowned artists. The cool series opens July 6 with the funk-soul-jazz of DOWN TO THE BONE and continues through the end of August. The jazz nights will be filled with an eclectic mix, from the legendary tenor sax tones of DAVID "FATHEAD" NEWMAN, to the prolific jazz violin stylings of REGINA CARTER and the fleet-fingered riffs of Philly's own Tonight Show bandleader, guitarist KEVIN EUBANKS.

Only the best contemporary folk, blues, rock and alternative country artists will be found in the SUNDOWN MUSIC SERIES at the McLaughlin-Norcross Memorial Dell in Haddon Heights this summer. The series continues through June when enigmatic songsters CATIE CURTIS and JOHNNY A. take the outdoor stage in Haddon Heights, comfortably nestled in wooded surroundings. Roots rock stars STEVE FORBERT and TERRI HENDRIX and are among those brightening the Dell at sundown during the month of July, while home-grown talent SUSAN WERNER and critically acclaimed SOPHIE B. HAWKINS keep August on the cutting edge.

Family entertainment is always a big part of Camden County's summer series, and Mom and Dad have even more reason than ever to enjoy this summer with the kids in the parks. Saluting over 70 years of the drive-in movie theater, the STARLIGHT CLASSIC MOVIE SERIES projects a half dozen Hollywood favorites from Grease to Monsters, Inc. onto the big screen at Cooper River Park. Kids can enjoy arts and crafts or a nature walk during the summer's MONDAY AND FRIDAY FUNDAYS, or marvel at a magician during the IT'S SHOWTIME events at Berlin and Haddon Heights Parks. The FRIDAY FAMILY VARIETY SERIES at Haddon Heights Park will have the young and young at heart smiling when a variety of acts, from puppeteers to jugglers perform evenings beginning June 25. Youngsters can enjoy even more performances during the CAMPBELL'S SOUP TEN FRIDAYS OF FUN at the Walt Whitman Cultural Arts Center.

With highlights too numerous to mention, free world class entertainment makes the parks of Camden County the place to be this summer. Complete listings and information can be found on the Camden County website at www.camdencounty.com, and in the full-color, 8-page PARK EVENTS GUIDE that can be picked up for free at all County Stores: Echelon Mall, Winslow Service Center, Cherry Hill Mall, and the new Gloucester Township County Store at 1333 Blackwood-Clementon Road, Clementon.
