Big Brass Bed, the finely tuned group of south Florida musicians honoring the legendary rock icon Bob Dylan, is doing his legacy proud with their renditions of Dylan's classics, hit songs, well-loved tunes, and often-requested more obscure songs during Dylan's 40-year career.
"If you had been at Lake Worth's Bamboo Room on a recent Tuesday night, you might have felt like you were sitting in on a semi-private rehearsal of Bob Dylan's band. The set list was all Dylan, a mix of classics (Lay Lady Lay, Tangled Up In Blue, Like a Rolling Stone) and newer material (High Water from the Love and Theft album). And the sound was pure Dylan, a rollicking blend of blues, folk, country and other roots-loving styles. But there was a crucial difference: When the lead singer approached the mike, you could make out the lyrics." (Palm Beach Post)
The brainchild of lead vocalist and well-known Greenwich Village contemporary folk singer/songwriter Rod MacDonald, Big Brass Bed is a collaboration of an all star cast of well-known south Florida musicians including drummer Bill Meredith, vocalist and guitarist James London and keyboard player Mike Kerrigan. The group's first CD, entitled "A Few Dylan Songs by Big Brass Bed", recorded live at the Bamboo Room in Lake Worth, Florida, was featured at https://dylancoveralbums.com/vocalshtm#bbbed, alongside CDs by Joan Baez and The Bryds.
In their December 2003 issue, CityLink wrote of the CD: "led by Greenwich Village folk vet Rod MacDonald, Big Brass Bed dives with gusto into the music of Bob Dylan, covering early classics such as "Don't Think Twice It's All Right," 1970s tunes such as "Shelter From the Storm," 1980s fare such as "License To Kill," and "Mississippi," from 2001's Love and Theft. MacDonald's fine, earnest vocals receive sturdy backing from the band, featuring guitarist James London and keyboardist Mike Kerrigan. The CD is available at www.rodmacdonald.net/big_brass_bed.htm.
