Jill Scott The
Spice Girls may have coined the phrase "girl power," but new-wave soul sistas
Jill Scott and
Sunshine Anderson, and girl group
3LW, are living up to the reputation. With four nods for Scott and three apiece for Anderson and 3LW, these ladies led the nominations for the Seventh Annual Soul
Train Lady of Soul Awards, announced Monday (July 30) night during a press conference and party in Los Angeles.
Soul Train executive producer Don Cornelius, aided by pretty young things Shemar Moore (The Young and the Restless and host of the current Soul Train weekly television series) and Shawn Robinson of Access Hollywood, announced the nominations to a packed house of media, celebrities, and music-industry types on the set of the old Soul Train show in the Paramount Pictures lot.
Five other artists with two nominations apiece reflected the growing trend of strong women with strong voices leading the way in modern soul and R&B music. Destiny's Child has shown it's here to stay. Dream and Changing Faces are forging new ground in the girl-group genre. Acoustic guitar-playing, self-loving India.Arie has attracted a congregation of followers. And gifted newcomer Alicia Keys is the latest phenom to wow the world of popular music. All of these artists earned two nominations, reinforcing this year's trend of fresh faces and fresh voices leading the way in R&B.
But legends never die. The real lady marmalade, Miss Patti LaBelle, will be honored with the show's Lena Horne Award for Outstanding Career Achievement. And Scott, who has been on a jet set for stardom since her debut last year, will be presented with the prestigious Aretha Franklin Award for Entertainer of the Year. Decades ago, Aretha Franklin (THE lady of soul) demanded respect. Today, these ladies are proving they've earned it.
Soul Train's Lady of Soul Awards will be taped in Santa Monica, Calif., on Aug. 28. The two-hour, syndicated telecast is set to air Sept. 1 and will be hosted by Moore, R&B heavyweight Luther Vandross, Extra! host Leeza Gibbons, and Ruff Ryders rapper Eve.
