LOS ANGELES (Sprite Liquid Fans Website) - The Irvine, Calif., stop of the multi-band Sprite Liquid Mix tour on Saturday (Sept. 7) was a veritable smorgasbord of special-guest performances, as many of the bands on the bill invited their friends onstage to play (or, in some cases, just to stand around) with them.

Not only was headliner Jay-Z's whole Roc-a-Fella family, including Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, and Damon Dash, on hand for his set, but some other performers had guests as well. Talib Kweli invited his longtime friend (and former Black Star collaborator) Mos Def onstage for one of the show's highlights, with the two trading good-natured lyrical barbs.

During N.E.R.D.'s set, frontman and Neptunes member Pharell Williams brought out a sheepish Justin Timberlake, who hid behind a pulled-down baseball cap. When it looked like he was going to perform with the band, the audience cheered, but when he disappeared into the backstage mob without saying (or singing) a word, the crowd booed. Undaunted, Williams introduced pro skater Tony Hawk, who grabbed the mike for a quick thank you to win the crowd back.

The most unexpected cameo of the day, though, was during 311's set. After reminding the audience that they had been injured in a bus accident months earlier, frontman Nick Hexum brought out three members of Alien Ant Farm ?- singer Dryden Mitchell, bassist Tye Zamora, and guitarist Terence Corso ?- to play on 311's "Homebrew." Though Corso sported a cane, they all seemed to be recovered, leaping around and playing through the song with determination and intensity.
