MOTHXR Signs To Washington Square; Billboard And Twitter #1 Emerging Artist
New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Washington Square, Razor & Tie's alternative leaning imprint label, announces the addition of the indie band MOTHXR to the North American label and worldwide publishing rosters. The band will release their debut album in early 2016. Washington Square's international partner for MOTHXR's first album is the French company and lifestyle brand Kitsuné.

MOTHXR comments, "We're excited to be releasing our debut record with Washington Square. The label believes in our creative vision, and shares our independent spirit and NYC base."

"MOTHXR is an innovative, creative savvy group of musicians who have a unique style and true vision. We are very excited that they have chosen to work with Washington Square/Razor & Tie" adds Washington Square/Razor & Tie Co-Owner's Cliff Chenfeld and Craig Balsam.

MOTHXR will kick off a week long West Coast run with a headline show at The Roxy in Los Angeles on September 14th. The tour includes dates in San Diego, Costa Mesa and Santa Barbara and concludes with an appearance at the TBD Festival in Sacramento on Sept 20th (tour dates below). In November, the band will be part of the Corona Capital Festival in Mexico City.

The four piece band from Brooklyn, NY features actor/artist Penn Badgley (Greetings From Tim Buckley, Margin Call, Gossip Girl), bassist/producer Jimmy Giannopoulos (LOLAWOLF, Reputante), guitarist Simon Oscroft, and keyboardist Darren Will. In the last year, MOTHXR quietly released a number of songs that set the internet abuzz. "Easy," was a top ten track on the Hype Machine and the song sat at #1 on the Billboard and Twitter Emerging Artist charts in May (currently at #34). MTV reported that "within a week the sultry, sophisticated, genre-defying track had accumulated tens of thousands of listens and smashed the top 10 of bloggers' favourite, Hype Machine… the band's reign of cool is set to be unstoppable."

Neon Gold described the track as "[f]ully loaded with airtight guitars, smoked-out vocals, and icy synths, it comes together perfectly all wrapped up in a weathered leather jacket under the neon lights of the city." Nylon calls the band's sound "dark, brooding aesthetic and hazy, bass-heavy infectious bedroom jams."

Penn Badgley says the band's music lies "somewhere between DIY punk production aesthetic, new wave and R&B," naming influences like LCD Soundsystem, the Beastie Boys and Arthur Russell. He called their improvised songwriting "meticulous, but totally spontaneous."

Traveling with minimal analog recording gear, MOTHXR spent four weeks recording their album between Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. The band recorded five songs in five days on their way to completing a ten song record. Read more here about the band and album recording process in a Huffington Post interview.
MOTHXR has sold out headline shows in New York, LA, London and Paris, and previously toured with San Cisco, Sir Sly, Har Mar Superstar and Streets of Laredo. The band recently played Montauk's Surf Lodge Music Series as well as the first ever Full Moon Festival in Brooklyn.
