NEW YORK (Official Fans Website) - Acclaimed recording artist and performer Kathy Mattea has journeyed through
momentous personal and societal upheaval over the past few years, and has come through the experience profoundly changed. Rarely shy about addressing life's challenges, Mattea is bringing those emotions to the fore as she returns to touring and readies the Sept. 27 release of Right Out Of Nowhere.
Following her widely-hailed 2002 release Roses, Right Out Of Nowhere finds Mattea dealing with the losses of her parents, marital struggles and the disquieting realities of war in a self-produced project unlike any she has previously embarked upon. A mix of original songs and thoughtfully reworked covers including "Gimme Shelter" and "Down On The Corner," the album only confirms her place as a true artist - equal parts vocals and voice.
I am learning to embrace the lovely paradoxes of this life, and I have found miracles, some tiny, some unfathomable," Mattea writes in the cover letter that will accompany the release. Therein, she tells the story of a performance that set the tone for the new album. "We re-interpreted an old song, with a new sound, a new reference point, and found a new kind of passion," she writes. "There was a different kind of fire to that moment."
Mattea is fanning that new flame in a full slate of upcoming performances (below), and she recently appeared on a two-hour episode of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. In the special episode about missing children, Kathy gave an intimate performance of her emotional single "Among The Missing." She is, of course, no stranger to the spotlight, with a career that has spanned 20 years and every level of success imaginable.
From her first hit, "Love At The Five And Dime" in 1986, to the emotional resonance of "Where've You Been" and affirmation of "Walking Away A Winner," Mattea has exuded the kind of class and integrity that fans, critics and peers can't help but embrace. Grammy and CMA Awards preceded the unabashed respect shown her more recent folk and Celtic-inflected offerings, giving her career an enviable foundation - a platform stable enough to support the continuing evolution displayed on her new album.
