Michael McDonald Patrick Simmons Tom Johnston "Black Water" 2003 Live@Chicago
It was a Doobie Brothers reunion of sorts back in 2003 when Michael McDonald invited the remaining two original members as guests for this concert. Black Water is an original Doobie Brothers song, so it is very appropriate for these two original members to be on hand. After Patrick and Tom are introduced by Michael, Patrick makes light banter at Michael's expense... to ease the tension. It would seem that whatever bad feelings existed have long since faded! Nothing to see there.... these artists are all professionals, with nothing to prove. The fact is that the Doobie Brothers were fading, both creatively and physically when Tom Johnston was forced to leave the group for health reasons in the late 70's. From my point of view, Michael McDonald added creativity and direction to the Doobie Brothers' train wreck, effectively adding a new R&B twist to the southern sound they were known for.
Yet after all these years, having released a total of 17 albums, earning 13 RIAA Gold and 11 multi-Platinum sales awards and have performed around the world for more than 35 million fans, and still performing to this day, you have to ask why they aren't in the Rock and Roll hall of Fame! What's with that? Explain please!
