Australian music has produced plenty of novelty tracks and one hit wonders; especially in the 1970's and early 1980's. Mojo Singers 'C'mon Aussie C'mon', Two Man Band's 'Up There Cazaly', 'Kiss Army' by Norman Gunston, Austentayshus' 'Australiana' and this late 1980 smash 'Shaddap you face' by Joe Dolce. An American by birth, but an Australian resident in the late 70's, Dolce had a massive hit with this somewhat satiric and stereotypical expression of Italian character in 'Shaddap you face'. It wasn't just Aussies that loved it; the song went gangbusters in multiple countries including Britain, New Zealand, Canada and Germany, among the 15 nations that propelled it to #1!. Spending a whopping 8 weeks at the top downunder; the song ended 1980 and launched 1981 at pole position. A couple of follow up tracks were issued, but effectively Joe is a one hit wonder with this charming and light pop recording. Joe reinvented himself as a poet and essayist. This song is a musical postcard from a different era!
