Major News Events Show Impact On Top 20 Streaming Audio Markets In Triton Digital's August 2014 Ranker
New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Triton Digital, a leading technology provider for the audio industry, today unveiled its monthly Ranker for August 2014, revealing the month's 20 top streaming audio providers, as well as insights into listening trends. Overall listening showed steady growth in August 2014, up by more than 14% compared to August 2013. August also brought increases in the top 20 markets, particularly Phoenix and St. Louis, which may be attributed to severe weather and news events.

"Radio has long been a go-to news source for consumers, and it now appears that news events' impact on listening is extending to streaming as well," said Rob Favre, CCO/GM Measurement & Analytics at Triton Digital. "More and more, people are tuning in to local or hometown stations from around the country, so it's interesting to see how major news events may be showing their effects on digital streaming of local market stations."

Key findings of the August 2014 Ranker include:
Average Active Sessions (AAS) continued to grow in August 2014, with the M-F 6A-8P daypart up 14.1% and M-SU 6A-Midnight daypart up 14.6% compared to the same period last year.

Of the top 20 markets, Phoenix showed the largest listening gain with a 27.8% increase in AAS, followed by St. Louis (17.4%), Tampa (16.9%), Atlanta (8.7%), Philadelphia (6.5%) and Washington (5.4%).

The strong gain in Phoenix could be attributed to the two storms that hit Phoenix on August 12th and August 19th causing flash flooding and power outages across the valley.

The gain in St. Louis could be attributed to the shooting of Michael Brown on August 9th in suburb Ferguson, MO, which sparked anarchy in the region.

The Adult Contemporary format showed the largest listening gains with a 23.8% increase in AAS, followed by Top 40 (8.4%), Hot AC (6.7%), Classic Rock (6.0%) News/Talk (5.4%), Country (3.7%) and Classic Hits (1.3%)

During the M-F 6A-8P daypart, 32% of listening took place on an iOS device, followed by Android (28%) and Google Chrome (10%).

Android closed the gap a bit in August, just four percentage points behind iOS, compared to six in July 2014.
