Nocturnal Rage Bio
Seattle's notorious rain clouds set the backdrop for the thunderous reign of Nocturnal Rage. These three colorful emcees emerge from Hip Hop?s gray area, much like a fiery sunrise in a dampened sky. Caligula, Pyromaniak, and Fo? Feva are stepping out with a fresh perspective on what music means to them. While some Hip Hop groups are using Rock n Roll samples to liven up their sound, Nocturnal Rage is an all-inclusive live band performing Hip Hop with a Rock n Roll edge.
After meeting as childhood friends in Seattle, the men maintained a friendship even when Caligula went away to college at the USC. Pyromaniak and Fo? Feva traveled to see Caligula, and although the early beginnings of the group were forged in California, they knew they wanted to represent their home city. ?When we first started we were doing a compilation, uniting a lot of our Seattle homies to see how it would work out,? explains Fo? Feva, ?but as time started passing, it started really getting based on three cats. We were the ones who was really makin? the music, and everybody else was falling off. For our first album, The Labyrinth, we made like over 150 songs ? we took the best songs, but it?s nothing in comparison to what we?re doing now.?
Just like the song ?Player, Hustler, Baller? on their self-titled debut Noc On Wood album, each group member has their own distinct personality. Pyromaniak is the charming ladies man who lights the mic on fire, Caligula is the charismatic baller delighting in aged scotch, and Fo? Feva, who took on his name in dedication of his friend ?Lil J Tha Feva? who passed away, is the hard-hitting hustler. ?Our mindset is the same, but our styles and the way we attack it ? there?s a difference,? explains Caligula. ?Usually in a group there?s one person that leads it ? but we?re three leaders who came together and formed a group.?
Nocturnal Rage met up with the legendary emcee and A&R guru Daddy-O of Stetsasonic in 2002, and their time with him helped to develop the live band concept they envisioned. Their first single in the Spring of 2002 ?Miss Mary Jane? was remixed with an appearance from funk icon Rick James. Several critics took notice of the single immediately, and even though the band could have easily been pigeonholed into a West Coast niche, they received love from many radio stations east of the Mississippi, including popular stations WEDR and WPOW in Miami, and WLLD in Tampa.
The experience collaborating with Rick James was very exciting, and in coping with Rick James? untimely death, Nocturnal Rage reflects with happy memories of their work together. ?Uncle Rick was an inspiration the minute he walked in the door,? says Fo? Feva. ?He had a glow around him, a sense of history.? ?It made me feel anything?s possible,? continues Pyromaniak. ?To record with a legend is an unexplainable feeling.?
Live shows have been a major focus for the group over the past three years. In addition to hitting the road on a West Coast mini-tour, they performed shows across the country opening for various artists including MC Lyte, the Wu Tang Clan, Warren G, and DJ Quik. They hit Europe in early 2003 for the Midem music conference, and performed in Amsterdam, Italy, London, and France. The bulk of 2004 was spent recording new material for a sophomore album in the new state-of-the-art Noc On Wood studio, and they continued to practice the stage show diligently in the amazing Noc On Wood performance facility, affectionately known as The Woodshed.
The group?s next album, Way Out Your Mind, will drop early in 2005, and the project will feature the spirited sound they have been honing over the past two years. Caligula explains that capturing the energy of their live show is the ultimate goal with the album. ?Our live performance is truly what Noc Rage is,? he says. ?With this album we not only capture the essence, we exploit the hell out of it. This album is definitely a new genre of Hip Hop. The only featured artists are singers that we have worked with for years, and they are actually part of our band. The rest of the album is just Nocturnal Rage, because three emcees per song is enough. We really want our people to see what Noc Rage is all about with this album.?
The soulful cutting edge flavor that Nocturnal Rage brings with their band is certain to attract fans from many genres of music. With a forward approach to music, business, and the importance of the family bonds that hold them tight, the sky is the limit!
