Bird York is an artist you probably know without being aware you do. You might have heard her music featured prominently in the film "Crash," Fox's series "House" and F/X's series "Nip/Tuck" or seen her acting on NBC's "The West Wing" or HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm." On February 21, Narada EMI will release York's major label debut, "Wicked
Little High."
York's new album features 12 original songs, including "In the Deep," which was written and performed in the critically acclaimed film "Crash." The album also features collaborations with Grammy-award winning producer Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Madeleine Peyroux, Shawn Colvin) and Grammy-award winning engineer/mixer Thom Russo (Macy Gray, Audioslave). Steve Caton (Tori Amos) plays guitar on select tracks. York plays electric and acoustic guitar, electronic autoharp, squeeze box and gopichand on the record.
KCRW's Nic Harcourt calls York, "a songwriter of extraordinary depth with a voice to match" and NPR's Liane Hansen calls her music "sultry and sensual." Paul Haggis, "Crash's" Oscar-award winning writer/director says, "Bird is a brilliant singer-songwriter. Her songs are like ground glass in honey; and even after you know that, she just keeps tempting you until you swallow. I'm an addict." Narada Senior Vice President David Neidhart says of York, "Her sound is unique but universal, transcending genre and fashion. She is creating music that will truly move people who love powerful and compelling music."
York's songs have been featured in a number of television shows and films, including FX's "Nip/Tuck," Fox's "House," the WB's "Everwood," the John Cusack produced film, "Never Get Outta The Boat" and the independent film "Shelter Island." Prior to "Wicked Little High," York released two albums, both on Blissed Out Records.
In addition to her work as a musician, Bird York is a highly accomplished actor and screenwriter. Her credits include recurring roles on NBC's "The West Wing," HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and Fox's "The O.C." Other credits include films with Tom Waits, Diane Keaton, Julianna Margulies and Dennis Hopper and the starring role, portraying a young Naomi Judd in the NBC miniseries "Love Can Build a Bridge." She will be seen opposite Anne Heche in the upcoming Lifetime movie "Fatal Desire" this February. As a screenwriter, York has a development deal at Sony Television and has just completed a pilot for John Wells Productions/Warner Brothers.
