London, UK (PINK FLOYD GUITAR/ www.pinkfloyd-guitar.com) -
David Gilmour's successful solo album 'On an Island' hit the stores on March 6th in the UK and Europe, and March 7th in the US and has taken off ever since. The album will mark the release of David's first studio recordings since Pink Floyd's 1994 multi-platinum The Division Bell.
What does the album contain musically?
"What is better content than the voice and guitar of Pink Floyd!?! Don't get me wrong it is not another Pink Floyd album and there is not much Floyd essence, but however, there is enough quality music to listen to. The press makes a number of statements about the album.'
"From the first moments of the sound collage that begins On an Island, you know it's a special experience that not only bears comparison with the best of Pink Floyd, but also confirms their lead guitarist and singer as an outstanding solo artist.'
"Here he reveals a personal vision and a breadth of styles - folk, jazz, orchestral and rock - brought together as a unified piece through his lyrical guitar playing and instantly recognizable voice.'
The album concept 'On an Island' is perceived to be David Gilmour's and Polly Samson's aspects of life such as pure love, feelings and happiness and not just about money. It has already been clearly stated that Gilmour is 'not' obsessed with money and fortune. In the track 'This Heaven' he elaborates - "life is much more than money buys, when I see the faith in my children's eyes..."
David Gilmour makes use of a number of sound genres as he did in his super-group with the song titles The Blue, Take a Breadth, Red Sky at Night, This Heaven, Then I Close My Eyes, Smile, A pocketful of Stones, Where We Start
David Gilmour has teamed up with some well-known names that include Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music), Jools Holland who is an outstanding Blues pianist, his fellow Pink Floyd band member Richard Wright playing the Hammond Organ and his great wife Polly Samson who took part in the writing credits
David Gilmour has stressed his utter solo musicianship through the following comments.
"It's my best and most personal work," he says. "Making it with my musician friends has been a positive experience on so many levels." And touring it this spring can only take him to a new high."
