BURBANK, CA. (Warner Bros. Records) - Propelled by the runaway success of "Bad Day," the self-titled debut album from Canadian singer-songwriter
Daniel Powter that was released on April 11th, has entered the Billboard Top 200 album charts at No 9, scanning 89,213 copies according to figures released by Soundscan today. In addition, "
Bad Day" is the best-selling single in the U.S. this week, claiming the Number One spot on Billboard's Hot 100 chart for the past 3 weeks in a row. The piano-driven pop track is also the most digitally downloaded track in
America for the 5th week in a row; it has sold over 800,000 copies to date.
The success of the album, a blue-eyed soul-pop classic that Rolling Stone describes as a distillation of Powter's "love for old Motown records into sweetly groovy tunes laced with falsetto vocals and buoyed by a hefty backbeat," has benefited from constant radio airplay and TV exposure. Daniel Powter was the "First Look" on MTV's TRL April 6th. The video for "Bad Day," has been in XXL rotation on VH1 as a "You Oughta Know Artist," occupying the coveted "Gung Ho" spot upon release with over 50 spins per week. In addition, in the last week, Powter has appeared on the "Today Show," "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," and "Live with Regis and Kelly." He will perform "Bad Day" on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on April 24th as well as "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," April 27th.
The excitement about Powter in America comes on the heels of his phenomenal year across the world, where he has already sold well over a million albums. "Bad Day" was certified as the Number One Radio Airplay song in Europe in 2005, beating out the likes of Coldplay, U2, and James Blunt. He also topped the individual airplay charts for the year in France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and Australia, among others.
Powter's debut album, which the artist has described as "keyboard music on steroids," was produced by Mitchell Froom, who is known for his work with Elvis Costello, Crowded House, and Randy Newman, as well as being co-produced by Vancouver's Jeff Dawson. American tour dates to support Daniel Powter are currently in the works and will be announced shortly.
