LOS ANGELES (AP) - Academy Award-winners Tom Hanks and "L.A. Confidential" director Curtis Hanson have been elected to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences board of governors. Three governors represent each of the Academy's traditional 13 branches and are elected to staggered terms so that each branch elects or re-elects one governor each year. The academy organizes the annual Oscar telecast, the top honor for film achievement. Hanks, a member of the actor's branch, fills the vacancy left after the resignation of Gregory Peck, who chose not to finish the last third of his three-year term, the academy announced Monday.
The 45-year-old won best-actor Oscars for "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump." Hanks' new post will be up for re-election next year.
