LOS ANGELES (MTV) - Mandy Moore beat out her pop peer Britney Spears for Breakthrough Female Performance at the 2002 MTV Movie Awards on Saturday (June 1) at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The show airs on MTV on Thursday (June 6).

Moore earned the honor for her starring role in her debut film, a more serious teen flick, A Walk to Remember, while Spears lost out with her teen roadtrip effort in Crossroads. Moore also beat Penelope Cruz (Blow), Ann Hathaway (The Princess Diaries), and Shannyn Sossamon (A Knight's Tale).

Will Smith, meanwhile, nabbed the Best Male Performance award for his portrayal of boxer Muhammad Ali in Ali. And, in the Best Musical Sequence category, kudos went to Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman for Moulin Rouge!

Musical highlights included Eminem's performance of "Without Me," which began with the rapper's alter-ego Rap Boy flying onto the stage and into a phone booth, with Em reemerging for the song. The White Stripes performed their hit "Fell in Love With a Girl" and "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground," while Kelly Osbourne made her debut onstage with her version of Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach."
