Sydney, AU. (EMI MUSIC Australia) - MySpace.com today launched an Australian first in online and music interaction, giving users the chance to direct a video for one of the country's most popular and respected bands, Silverchair.
'Straight Lines' - the first single and video from the band's eagerly awaited new album, Young Modern, will premiere on the band's Myspace site (www.myspace.com/silverchair) this Friday at 12pm. It will be the first new Silverchair song to be unveiled since 2002's landmark Diorama album.
However, for the first time, people will also be able to make their own video for the epic rock track and share it with the world. Budding local directors can download unedited footage of the band performing, 'Straight Lines', via www.myspace.com/silverchairvideocomp. It is then up to them to edit together the coolest video possible using the tools provided online.
'This is a fantastic opportunity for MySpace users to get involved creatively with the site and with one of our country's most well known bands,' general manger for Fox Interactive Media, Rebekah Horne said.
'This is the first time this has been done, so we really want people to get their creative juices flowing and get involved – anyone with a PC or Mac computer can do it.'
Each video submitted will be uploaded onto the competition site, with a top five determined by the most number of views made by fellow MySpace users.
The members of Silverchair will have final say on which of the top five videos will become the winner.
'With the new album we really wanted to shake things up and just recapture the fun of being in band so letting anyone make a video for our song fits in well with that approach', says Silverchair drummer Ben Gillies. 'I've got no idea what kinds of videos people will make but it should be interesting to see what they come up with.'
The winning video will be aired on Australia's number one music television show, Video Hits, and will get to meet the band and be presented with a signed gold album plaque as well as a copy of the band's new album, Young Modern (national release on March 31).
Public voting closes on March 14, so visit www.myspace.com/silverchairvideocomp (click here) to get involved.
