Philpot's story is already mythical. Barely old enough to drink and hailing from Dugger, IN (population under 1000), the band seemed cosmically destined to form from the melding of an appreciation for organic rock, innate musical proficiency and creativity and a real lack of anything else to do in Dugger. With the local flower shop serving as writing and rehearsing space, Philpot's already substantial catalogue of material was born.
In stores June 19, HATE WRITES BETTER THAN LOVE is the 48-minute version of the Philpot story. It's got pounding anthems ("Got It In", "Same Old Story"), political statement ("This Nation's Son"), old-school guitar rock ("Girls Don't Know"), the moody acoustic ("Fall") and a couple brushes with mental instability ("Waiting in the Rain," "Etc. Etc."). Big music from a small place, the rock you grew up with braided with the rock that continues to inform and transform the musical landscape today.
Frontman Kentz Ward, sounding like a cross between Liam Gallagher and Kurt Cobain, invests his soul and makes every note of these songs count. Caleb Smith's lead guitar works in tandem with Josh Kennedy's rhythm patterns to give the songs shape and a space in which to breathe. AJ Boone's keyboards instill a sense of ambiance, and Arthur Ready and Tyler Evans provide the propulsive beat.
Capturing that energy was Bill Klatt, who brought a diverse resume (The Rolling Stones, Cher, Sneaker Pimps, Days of the New, Rick Rubin, Scott Litt) to inform and challenge the band. Show Place Studios (Nirvana, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton) provided an historical recording vibe, as did mixing house Electric Lady (who's who from John Lennon, the Beastie Boys, Weezer, Madonna and of course, Jimi Hendrix) and mastering facility Sterling Sound (the best from David Bowie, Aerosmith, Kanye West to Mariah Carey and Metallica).
Philpot is on the road throughout the Midwest, bringing their epic (sometimes four-hour) sets to fans, having opened for Nonpoint, Days of the New, Seer and most recently, Snowden and The Kings of Leon.
