NEW YORK (DJ Magazine) - DJ Tiesto has been voted the best DJ in the world by the readers of DJ Magazine. The Dutch trancemeister, real name Tijs Verwest, is the first non-British DJ to receive the prestigious award. Tiesto whizzed his way to the top, thrashing the winners of the last two years' polls, progressive dons John Digweed and Sasha, to the number one slot after a record-breaking number of votes. His victory crowns a good year for trance, with fellow Dutchmen Ferry Corsten and Armin Van Buuren also leaping into the top ten. Continued high placings for Paul Van Dyk (#4), and Paul Oakenfold (#6), indicate that trance - after a humungous backlash following its cheesy Euro-commercialization - is well and truly back! "I'm not afraid to call myself trance," Tiesto told DJ Magazine. "I consider myself an ambassador for trance, a DJ who proves that the music can still be innovative and uplifting without being cheesy." But it is America where Tiesto has caused the biggest impression. The Americans lap up his DJ sets, he loves their "youthful enthusiasm" and was high on the bill at the last Coachella festival in Palm Springs.
So far it's been a phenomenal 2002 for DJ Tiesto, who started the year by playing four major New Year's Eve parties, reaching 60,000 people in the UK. We then saw him sharing bills with Oakenfold at the Coachella Music Festival in California, and more recently joining Moby, David Bowie, Digweed, and Carl Cox for the Area2 Tour. What a way to finish 2002, by adding every DJ's dream award to their mantlepiece. A man on a mission, for Tiesto this trip is far from over!
