Unquestionably Cash Money/Universal Motown Records recording artist, Lil Wayne will go down in history as the best rapper of his generation. Indeed he may go down as one of the best artists in hip-hop period. In the span of his 13-year career, Lil Wayne has sold over six million units, including his magnum opus, multi-platinum The Carter III (2008).
Born Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr. and raised in New Orleans infamously poor Hollygrove neighborhood, Lil Wayne was discovered by Cash Money CEO Bryan 'Birdman' Williams when a mutual friend introduced him to the pre-teen rapper. The Birdman immediately saw a spark in the youngster's eyes and took him under his wing. In 1999 Lil Wayne released his solo debut Tha Block Is Hot. The album yielded a number one single with the title tune and was certified double platinum.
The following year Wayne released his sophomore LP Lights Out, which reached gold status and in 2002, Lil Wayne dropped his third solo LP 500 Degrees. It too went gold. Two years later Wayne released Tha Carter, the first album in the trilogy that would elevate Wayne to superstar status. Tha Carter (2004) was a commercial success selling over one million copies and reaching No 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts and No 2 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop chart. In 2005, Wayne released Tha Carter II, which sold over 1.8 million records and Like Father, Like Son, a collaboration between Lil Wayne and Birdman which has sold over 750,000 units, was released in 2006.
In 2008 Lil Wayne released the critically acclaimed, fan favorite and highest selling album of the year Tha Carter III. January of 2009 sees the continuation of Wayne's road to super stardom. He is currently Grammy's man of the year, drawing a total of eight nominations - more than any other artist -- for his blockbuster multi-platinum album Tha Carter III, and for his featured performance on 'Swagga Like Us' by T.I. featuring Kanye West, Jay-Z and Lil Wayne. 'The nominations itself are unbelievable, I'm going to continue doing what I've been doing, but I'm going to do it better,' says Lil Wayne.
Tha Carter III is nominated in the prestigious Album of the Year category as well as for Best Rap Album, and all of its first four smash singles drew individual recognition: 'Lollipop' featuring Static Major is nominated for Best Rap Song; 'Got Money' featuring T-Pain for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration; 'A Milli' for Best Solo Rap Performance; and 'Mr. Carter,' featuring Jay-Z for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. These are the New Orleans native's first Grammy nominations for his own album. For his collaborations on other projects, 'Swagga Like Us' is nominated in the Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group and Best Rap Song. The 51st Annual Grammy Awards will be held on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, and broadcast on CBS.
