Berkeley will be keeping Bay area music lovers plenty busy this summer with a slew of great (and free or inexpensive) events.
The fun kicks off with Amoebapalooza, the annual celebration of the musical geniuses that staff Amoeba, at the Mezzanine on Sunday, August 2nd. Acts featuring primarily Amoeba employees will perform 15 minute mini-sets, and audience members can win fabulous prizes by voting for their favorite acts. The show starts at 8pm. Tickets are $5 in advance (limited quantity) and $7 at the door. The first 20 people who buy pre-sale tickets get a free Amoeba tote and t-shirt, and everyone will get a $5 Amoeba coupon with the price of admission upon entrance to the show. 21 and over only. August 7th finds Amoeba co-hosting and sponsoring the East Bay Express' 'Best of the East Bay Party' at the Oakland Museum of California. Celebrating the best of East Bay arts, culture and community, more than 20 bands will perform on six stages, including the Amoeba -sponsored main stage and DJ stage hosted by the Oakland Faders. Amoeba Music's booth will feature live silk-screening demonstrations, limited-edition t-shirts and chances to win $100 Amoeba gift certificates, Guitar Hero game kits, t-shirts and more. Admission is free and open to all ages. And for the kids that like to rock, there's the Chabot Space & Science Center's Kids' Zone with a variety of hands-on activities and music from 5pm-9pm. Jay Reatard will continue his tour of all three Amoeba locations with a free in-store at 6pm PT on Saturday, August 22nd at Amoeba SF. Reatard will then play a free in-store at 6pm the following day at Amoeba Berkeley (with the whole 'Amoeba Tour' kicking off Tuesday, August 18 at Amoeba Hollywood in LA). Reatard will be celebrating the release of his new album 'Watch Me Fall,' out August 18 on Matador. Limited edition silkscreened posters designed by Jay will be available with purchase of the new album at each in-store, while supplies last. As always, the shows are free and all ages.
Finally on 9/9/09, Amoeba will celebrate the release of the Beatles reissues with celebrations in all three locations. Amoeba Berkeley will have DJ's and trivia contest, while Amoeba SF will have a Beatles tribute band performing, DJs and giveaways.
