State Senate President Malcolm A. Smith, Assemblywoman Carmen E. Arroyo, and Tito Puente, Jr., are pleased to announce an upcoming tribute concert dedicated to the memory of NYC Latin music legend Tito Puente. 1-800-Cantaso is working with local officials to organize the concert as a public service event to the thousands of fans who continue to be inspired by Puente's music a decade after his passing.
The concert will be held on Puente's birthday, April 20, 2011, and will feature many top Latino artists. William Ferro, a partner in the law firm Ferro, Kuba, Mangano, Sklyar, P.C. and 1-800-Cantaso is himself a fan of Puente and says, "I grew up with my dad listening to all the great Latin artists including Tito Puente, Mongo Santa Maria and Celia Cruz. Tito Puente's music was and is an inspiration to so many and his impact on music today can be heard in so many popular artists. Our firm which represents so many Latinos throughout New York is proud to honor his legacy."
Senate President Pro Tempore Malcolm A. Smith says, "For more than 50 years, Tito Puente, the king of Latin music, delivered legendary performances which transcended cultural and generational boundaries. Ten years after his passing, his impact is greater than ever and his work and his passionate spirit will be an influence for decades to come. It is a privilege to honor him today on the 10th anniversary of his passing."
Not only did Tito Puente break ground as a performer, exposing Latin jazz and salsa music to mainstream audiences during his five-decade career, he was also committed to serving his community. His philanthropic endeavors include founding the Tito Puente Scholarship Foundation, which benefits musically gifted children nationwide.
