Las Vegas, Nevada (Top40 Charts/ Decade of Sleep Official Website) - Fall 2010 is looking to be an exciting time for Canada's Decade of Sleep with the release of their debut self titled full length album and an Eastern Canadian tour. Kicking off the tour in London, Ontario on
September 24, the band will head east for dates in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick with a stop in Montre'al, Quebec.
The band, featuring lead singer Phil Laffin, drummer Mat Pataki, bass player Eric Walker and guitarist Lance Schibler, are happy to name off their favorite artists like The Beatles, The Who, Billy Joel and Radiohead, however, they say their music is more influenced by current Canadian artists like Joel Plaskett, Zeus and The Waking Eyes.
'Between the 4 of us we have a pretty eclectic pool of influences to draw from,' says Laffin, 'however, I think it's a much better idea to look to what is current for influence in our music and try to figure out where it could go next...that being said we all love a good fist pumping, swaggering rock riff, but who doesn't.'
The new album, the follow up to 2009's Morning Sun EP, was produced by the band along with Juno Award winning engineer Denis Tougas (Amanda Marshall, Geddy Lee). A collection of 11 sharply written songs, the record they made is instantly accessible while at the same time sophisticated and exploratory. Once the record was tracked, another Juno Award winning engineer John 'Beetle' Bailey (Serena Ryder, The Rankin Family) was brought on to mix the record.
A stand out track on the album is 'Sympathy' about being in love and that feeling of excitement you get when someone new is in your life. 'Sometimes those people don't realize the strong emotions they can elicit,' says Laffin. 'Everything seems to go through a period of rebirth or rejuvenation and you're senses heightened and completely tuned into it. It's also such a great catchy rock song that I feel embodies the sound and style that we were aiming for.'
'Ocean' is another favorite because it's such a personal truth for Laffin. 'Ocean is a metaphor for going against convention and following the path that you feel is most satisfying for yourself and not being deterred.' Schibler also loves 'Ocean' because 'it has a great groove, a beautiful melody, and a really strong chorus. Phil intertwined the message and metaphor really beautifully.'
The name Decade of Sleep is an interesting one as it can inspire many explanations and out of their initial list of names that is the one that stood out. 'It is hinting at this feeling that there is a lack of rock and roll music in the purist sense out there right now,' explains Laffin. 'When you hear rock on the radio now a lot of it is sampled drumbeats and synth heavy almost 80's sounding rock, which we enjoy for sure but we had this feeling that eventually it will all come full circle.'
While the band formed in London, Ontario, Laffin is from the East coast so he is very much looking forward to touring there. 'I have a bunch of family and friends still living out in the maritimes so it'll be great to be able to play a show with them in attendance and I just can't wait to show the boys in the band the East coast... Point us to the kitchen parties.'
