New York, NY (Top40 Charts/ Sullivan Hall NYC) If you don't really know guitarist Steve Kimock's music, if you just read all the band names and song credits, if you simply look at all the shows and statistical data it would appear that he's spent his life building his sound and constructing his career, but that's not how it happened. "Whatever it is that I am, as recognizable as a guitarist, it hasn't been built up to, its been whittled down from" explains Kimock. "You just pull it apart piece-by-piece until all that's left is stuff that can't fall off."
From the blues-based slide guitar to sultry psychedelic rock and roll and even pop-friendly electronic music, guitarist Steve Kimock has wowed audiences with his uncanny ability to master a multitude of guitar sounds and styles. In the first month of 2011 alone, Kimock has elevated the dance and trip-hop of Praang, contributed his signature sound to a variety of
Grateful Dead projects including Bob Weir's Scaring the Children, Rhythm Devils and 7 Walkers, participated in and recorded with the improvisational Everyone Orchestra, taught in a blues workshop, inspired epic acoustic performances on Jam Cruise and lead two incredible sets in NYC with rock veterans, which lead to this Spring's residency in New York City at Sullivan Hall.
Each week of the three-week Steve Kimock residency will have a very different musical feel & flavor, with some of the best musicians based in New York City and beyond joining him each week such as
Marco Benevento, Adam Deitch (Lettuce, Breakscience), Mark Friedman (The Slip), Pete Sears (Hot Tuna), John Molo (Bruce Hornsby, Phil & Friends), Andy Hess (Gov't Mule,
Black Crowes, John Scofield) and more. The shows are scheduled for Wednesday March 23rd, March 30th and then on April 6th with special guest openers from the Bay Area, Moonalice.
One of the last original, surviving Bay Area psychedelic guitar players, Kimock is distinguished for his incomparable, variegated approach to the art of guitar; his ability to gently tug a flurry of notes with tonal precision is breathtaking. Kimock has a distinctive ability to elevate with genuine passion and emotion through his instruments, much like a literary poet speaks through words. His instinctive understanding of music and high-level dexterity has driven decades of worldwide performances embraced by fans and guitar aficionados as one who carries the free-form torch of improvisation.
Throughout the years, Kimock has explored music through an extensive catalog of original material in his own bands such as ZERO, KVHW and SKB, as well as through live performances with so many esteemed musicians. Kimock has performed alongside the likes of
Bruce Hornsby (and can be heard on two of Hornsby's releases), John Cipollina Jerry Garcia and all members of the Grateful Dead, as well as, Bonnie Raitt, The Allman Brothers,
Buddy Miles,
Buddy Cage, Screamin' Jay Hawkins,
Martin Fierro, John Kahn,
Bobby Vega, Joe Satriani, Baaba Maal, Angelique Kidjo, Elvin Bishop, all members of Phish,
George Porter Jr., Steve Winwood, Derek Trucks, Ivan Neville,
Grace Slick, Papa John Creach, Norton Buffalo, Henry Kaiser,
Peter Frampton, Amos Garrett, Warren Haynes, Hadi Al Sadoon, Stephen Perkins, Nicky Hopkins, Freddie Roulette, and so many more. "Unconventional. Experimental. It's sort of the Steve Kimock way." - CNN, 2009
