NEW YORK (Columbia Records press release) - Columbia Records artist Nellie McKay will embark on a series of North American concert dates, the artist's first since the February release of her critically-acclaimed debut album,
Get Away From Me. McKay's North American performances will include an appearance at the Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tennessee, on June 11 as well as support slots for Lou Reed, Alanis Morissette, and Barenaked Ladies.
McKay will spend portions of June in Europe opening for Sting. An artist of varied musical gifts, Nellie McKay creates music that is as surprising as it is provocative. Deceptively disarming, she is liable to hit you unexpectedly with her lacerating, often unexpurgated, insights. She will evoke the sultry screen sirens of the 1950s one moment and let loose a stream of 21st century hip-hop inspired rhymes the next.
Her debut album, the two-disk collection Get Away From Me, is a showcase for the many sides of Nellie McKay. For her ambitious debut, Nellie worked with producer Geoff Emerick, whose work in the recording studio began at Abbey Road with the Beatles and has gone on to include such great singer-songwriter-performers as Elvis Costello.
Nellie McKay is 19 years old. Who can begin to predict what's to come? Released in February 2004, Get Away From Me is proving itself to be one of the year's most press-worthy and auspicious releases. "Nellie McKay is so original," wrote Elle magazine, "she's practically invented her own genre: neo-retro-mellow-fury pop."
The Associate Press praised her debut as "...a compelling effort ripe with witty songwriting and solid musicianship, especially from someone who's only 19 years old."
"A new star is born!," proclaimed the Atlanta Journal & Constitution while Rolling Stone called her "... that rare performer whose talent is irrefutable."
