Waxploitation will release the debut Super Guachin EP Piratas y Fichines on December 13th, followed by Fauna's full length album Manshines on January 10th, as well as Mati Zundel's debut album Amazonico Gravitante on March 27th. Not just one style, ZZK is a movement that blends traditional South American music with futuristic interpretations, forging ahead with all kinds of new sounds and rhythms. Even at its most experimental, it's always hypnotic and danceable.
"It's always inspiring when artists take everything they have around them - old, new, rural, urban -- and make it their own", says Waxploitation founder Jeff Antebi. "With ZZK, you have so many artists putting out their debut albums right now, and already making a huge cultural impact. It's a tremendous creative flashpoint happening in Buenos Aires. Especially with electronic music."
ZZK Records developed organically out of the famed Zizek Club nights at Buenos Aires' premiere venue, Club Niceto. The shows were a bold move in 2006 when Argentine nightlife was still under siege by law enforcement after the tragic fire at Buenos Aires venue Cromagnon. Club Zizek brought together Buenos Aires' disparate electronic music scene, and which began fusing cumbia and reggaton with dancehall, folklore, electro, dubstep and funk. The club immediately gained a rabid following in Buenos Aires, highlighted by FADER in their 2008 feature on Cumbia in South America. Founding a label off their successful club nights, ZZK branched out beyond Buenos Aires playing Mad Decent vs. Iheartcomix's SXSW showcase in 2008, followed up by Roskilde Festival, Summer Stage in New York, and eventually Coachella in 2009.
